Prof. M. F. KARUNAKARAN (75) a scholar and a specialist in “English Language Teaching” was born on 12th December 1948, had his higher education at St. Joseph’s College, (1966-69), Jamal Mohammed College (1969-1971), tiruchirappalli and Research studies in Madras University, Department of English under Dr. S. P. Appasamy and Dr. Prabhakar Reddy. He entered into Tamilnadu Collegiate Educational Service in 1971, in Government Arts College as Assistant Professor, Professor of English and Principal, and retired from Service in December 2006.
He has written books, articles in International Magazines, National Periodicals and attended several conferences in Indian Universities. He was a close associate of Dr. Allen maley (Oxford University) the father of ELT. When he served in British Council Division of India in 1970s. Recently in 2013 Dr. Maley had a telephone talk with him from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. Prof. Karunakaran had a close contact with Ms. Gillian Porter, who is no more now, an Oxford Scholar who came to British Council Division, Madras in 1988-89. He participated in many seminars and conferences with her.
Prof. Karunakaran was invited to Cairo, by the Government of Egypt, for a conference in 1990, for his Contribution to Literature and Modern poetry. His name was recommended to Cambridge University Encyclopaedia by one Ms. Rose Mary Wilkinson, Gen. Secretary of “World Congress of Poets” for his achievements in ELT and Modern Poetry and his contribution to various International Magazines.
He has travelled widely to Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Jordan and other South Asian Countries as a scholar and a visitor. He is on a travel to Rome and Italy now. Even at this age he is concentrating on the growth and development of “English Language teaching” in Indian and other Universities as it is the only language wide spread at global level for communication. He is concerned over the deterioration and disaster of the real form of English Language due to the technological development such as Computers, Internets etc. The internet form of usage of short form of English and other code words has spoiled the younger generations, the language may lose its originality. He emphasized the language teachers of various institutions at tertiary and secondary level to take special interest to contribute the language development. We love our mother tongue, respect our Nation, at the same time we study English for International understanding and development.
